Heather and the ants
When we arrived at the airport in Calgary for our departure, we got the riot act that we were all responsible for our own jersey – that we must clean it, carry it with us at all times, not lose it, etc., or we will have to pay $80 to replace it. And, being the tight head prop, I wanted to stick up for my partner, the loose head prop, and verify that jersey number 1 was missing since the St.Albert game. Our jerseys were bright red, this is important later…
So, at the game against the Venezuelan National team at el Estadio Olimpico, we played hard! I was propping, Rene was #8 as usual. Heather, who was wearing the number 11 jersey, came up off the ground with her back to us – but from where Rene and I were standing it looked like the #1 jersey because the other 1 was covered with something reddish. We see Heather shooing something, and checking in her shorts, and trying to wipe something off of her, “ouch, ouch”.
She asks us to look under her jersey and in the back of her shorts to see if there is an ant or something because something just bit her. We notice that the jersey is swarming with ants. Rene and I look at each other, calmly, and get her to stop pulling on her clothes. I held on to the back of the jersey and Rene scraped off all of the insects to the ground with her mouth guard (see, they are not just for protecting brains anymore!!) and we squished the rest soundly. In order to keep everyone calm, we decided to tell her what really happened much, much later.
