ERURS 06 Certification Qualifications
This page has been updated as of February 18/08.
iRB Level 2 Rugby Refereeing course is being held in Edmonton on Sat, Apr 5 and Sun, Apr 6. Contact Rugby Alberta to get enrolled in this course if you’d like to get into refereeing this year & have not yet certified at iRB Level 2.
Level 1 is for Parents and School Teachers for interest and to be able to referee NON-CONTACT rugby, so U12 games. Or even better, take the iRB Level 2 iRB course and you can referee all levels. Each certification lasts four (4) years, but it is always a good idea to take a refresher course every two (2) years for about $50-70. That is for theory and technical training. Of course, actual refereeing, the practical aspect on applying the Laws, is the most important piece of the puzzle needed to be a certified rugby union referee.
The RE-Certification cycle, that is four years after the initial Level 2 course is successfully completed, will be changing as of this season. This new procedure of RE-certification has been approved by Rugby Canada.
ERURS Five Star RE-Certification Procedure
Activity - the referee will have been an active referee over the last four years, specifically done 10 games in the last season.
Education - the referee will have demonstrated an interest in continual self-development as a rugby union referee by attending society Education Seminars, at least four in the last two years, or attending other such appropriate sessions.
Law Knowledge - the referee will demonstrate knowledge of Rugby Law through successfully completing an approved law exam. The VIRRS or the Australia exams are acceptable exams.
Fitness - the referee will have demonstrated fitness ability through an appropriate evaluation of fitness.
Evaluation - the referee will have demonstrated acceptable refereeing ability through a satisfactory coaching report in the last year.
Of course, in order to make this new procedure successful and valuable, the ERU is responsible for providing enough games for the referees to referee, and the ERURS is responsible for providing quality Education Seminars, Fitness Testing Opportunities, providing an appropriate Law Exam, and finally, providing quality coaching for appropriate evaluation purposes.
Every referee who must RE-certify has until May 2008 to complete these components. So …
There will be seminars of all kinds this season again. There will be three fitness test opportunities. And you know what - even if you cannot make any of the three (3) official Fitness Testing opportunities, I personally will come to a track with you to time your butt sprinting and lapping, lapping and sprinting. I have a stop watch, a very big tape measure and some chalk. I will even run with you if that helps. OK, that’s not true. How can I time you if I am running around too? Seriously.
Coaching is going to be our big focus again this season. We have 9 Referee Coaches who are chomping at the bit to watch your & others’ games. I see from your surveys that most refs would like at least two (2), even three (3) coaching reports this season. Some a lot more!!! Which is great! But for now, it looks like we can do at least two (2) for each referee. Just to let you know the update there …
Mmm … Referee Development Survey is due before March 31/08. Even if I did not get your survey back, we will planning at least one (1) coaching session with you this season.
